Career history:

He is a graduate from the Department of Economic Sciences (WNE) (1974) and the Department of Mathematics (1977) at the University of Warsaw. In 1978-1979 he studied further both economics and mathematics at Wisconsin University in Madison (USA). In 1979 he received a PhD degree in economics in the filed of decision making theories. In 1989 he received a diploma and a postdoctoral degree and in 2001 he became a professor.

He has worked at the University of Warsaw since 1974, first in the position of an assistant professor, then an associate professor and finally a professor. Since 1993 he was the Head of the Warsaw Ecological Economics Center (WOEE), then, in 1996, he became the Head of the Division of Microeconomics and since 2005 he has held the position of the Dean of the Department of Economic Sciences (WNE) at the University of Warsaw. In 1988/89 he worked in the Institute of Behavioral Science at the University of Colorado, in Boulder, CO USA (Fulbright Visiting Fellow) and in 1992-1993 – as a visiting professor at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm.

In 1989-91 – being on a sabbatical from his position at the University of Warsaw – he worked in the Ministry of Environmental Protection, Natural Resources and Forestry as the Head of the Economic Department. In 1992-2006 he was the Deputy President and in 2008-2010 the President of the EkoFundusz Council; in 1991-1997 he was the member of the Management Board of the Beijer International Institute of Ecological Economics (the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences).

He is a former or present member of numerous scientific and editorial boards, including: International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), European Environment Agency, European Commission, European Consultative Forum on the Environment and Sustainable Development, GEF-Poland Small Grant Programme, the Institute of Environmental Protection (IOS), Ojcowski National Park, Warsaw University Centre for Environmental Studies, Ambio (the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences), the International Journal of Agricultural Resources, Governance and Ecology, Ecological Economics and finally Environmental and Resource Economics (Elsevier) where he holds the position of the deputy chief editor.

Scholarships and awards:

  • An award from the Ministry of National Education for the book entitled “Costing Nature in a Transition Economy” (2001)
  • An award from the Ekoprofit journal "Jakość dla środowiska" [Quality for the Environment] (2001)
  • An award from the Ministry of National Education for the contribution to the publication entitled “Transforming the Polish Economy” (1995)
  • A Pew Scholar Award in Conservation and Development (1993-1996)
  • Valfrid Paulsson Guest Professor, the Beijer Institute of Ecological Economics, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (1992-1993)
  • Fulbright Visiting Fellow at the University of Colorado-Boulder (1988-89)
